Little Taste of Home

tequila on the beach at sunset

My month-long artist residency in St. Barth will be over in a week. I will be so sad to leave, but one thing I really miss is cooking! I'm looking forward to farmer's markets and making lots of yummy summer delights. And summer is a time when I tend to really get back to my Mexican roots. OK I'm not really Mexican, but my taste buds definitely are. I'm excited for fish tacos!

Update: Mom's Party!

A few weeks ago we posted a teaser about the surprise party we were about to throw for our mom's 60'th birthday. Well, great news, it was a huge success!! Our little mommy was so surprised, and so happy!! AND, the food was a big hit. We went with a Spanish theme with red decor, and made red sangria and lots of tapas... perfect little nibbles for a party!

Wait, first of all, before I talk about tapas, we need to have a moment for the cake Siobhan made - the cake you may have noticed in the aforementioned post. It was a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, and man alive, it was delicious. After Mom blew out her candles, it was gone within minutes. Maybe if you are lucky Siobhan will talk about the recipe soon...

...She also made these tiny chocolate cupcakes, which were adorable as well as yummy.

By the way, they are displayed on the cupcake stand our step-dad made for Siobhan for Christmas. Isn't it pretty?

So, in all of the excitement we didn't get pictures of all the tapas. For example, we made some really amazing tiny meatballs (recipe here) that got eaten up so quick that we didn't have a chance to snap a photo. There was also a delightful orange and fennel salad, some really great marinaded olives involving cumin and fennel seeds (which I am for SURE making again soon so stay tuned), and these paprika-spiced almonds:

Basically, you blanch about 1 lb raw almonds, remove their skins then toast them for about 7-9 minutes at 400°F, stirring occasionally, until golden and aromatic. Toss them with a tbsp of Spanish olive oil, then sprinkle with a mixture of coarse sea salt and smoked Spanish paprika, which has been ground in a mortar and pestle to a fine powder. Stir again and serve.

We also made prosciutto wrapped asparagus, a Spanish tortilla, homemade hummus, and the cutest dish by far, these tasty little cheese & olive empanadillas:

These were particularly fun to make, so here's the full recipe for you:

(makes 26)
3 oz firm or soft cheese (we used feta), diced
1/2 cup pitted green olives, diced
1/4 cup sundried tomatoes in oil, drained & diced
1¾ oz canned anchovies, drained & diced
pepper
2 tbsp sundried tomato paste (I think we just used regular tomato paste)
plain flour, for dusting
1 lb 2 oz ready-made puff pastry, thawed if frozen
beaten egg, to glaze
fresh flat-leaf parsley sprigs, to garnish

Preheat oven to 400°F. Put all the chopped ingredients in a bowl, season with pepper to taste and gently mix together. Stir in the tomato paste.

On a lightly floured work surface, thinly roll out the puff pastry. Using a plain, round 3¼-inch cutter, cut into 18 circles. Gently pile the trimmings together, roll out again, then cut out an additional 8 circles. Using a teaspoon, put a little of the prepared filling in the center of each circle.

Dampen the edges of the pastry with a little water, then bring up the sides to cover the filling completely and pinch the edges together with your fingers (I used a fork) to seal them. With the tip of a sharp knife, make a small slit in the top of each pastry. Store the pastries in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake them.

Place the pastries onto dampened baking sheets and brush each with a little beaten egg to glaze. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown, crisp and well risen.

Serve the empanadillas piping hot, warm or cold, garnished with parsley sprigs.
Enjoy!

And Happy Birthday again Mom, we love you!!!!! xoxox

Happy Birthday Mom!!

We are moments away from surprising our Mom for her 60th birthday. There are 30 people down the street at our friend Sharon's house right now! My brother and sister and I had a crazy but fun day of prepping and cooking and sneaking down the street to decorate...  wish us luck!
Happy Birthday Mom we love you!!

Happy Valentimes!

Our friends Caitlin and Kyle had us over for brunch on Sunday, and these are some yummy cupcakes they made. Aren't they cute? And after we took a bite and confirmed that they were delicious, Caitlin told us they were vegan. I never would have guessed!
Happy love day everyone! xox

Eggplant Rollantini from Paolo's Kitchen

We discovered these peeps at our farmer's market, and we have eaten so many of their rollantini this year it's not even funny. It is seriously so yummy, and all you do is pop it in your oven for 40 minutes. We've also tried their lasagna and maybe some other things I forget, ...very good, but the eggplant rollantini is something special. If you NYC area folks ever come across it, I highly suggest you pick one up.

The Best Cup of Coffee in LA

I love coffee!  I cannot start my morning without it.  I normally make my own at home using a French Press, resulting in a strong, muddy, rich cup o' Joe.  BUT, there are times when I run out of coffee or half 'n half and need to buy my daily cup.  When we lived in West Hollywood, I would always go to Kings Road Cafe to get my fix.  It was right down the street from us and on my route to work.  Since we've moved I am unable to stop there on my way to work, but I still go there on the weekends sometimes either just for the coffee or to have breakfast.  The coffee is hands down the best that I have had in LA - great flavor, really strong, and leaves a pile of mud at the bottom of the cup (which I believe is indicative of REAL GOOD coffee).  If you live in LA in the West Hollywood area and you like GOOD coffee, please go buy a cup at Kings Road.  If you don't like it, then you don't know what you're talking about! ;)

Grub

I had to share this picture because I love it!  Carlinhos and I had breakfast at Grub one morning and this is what they bring to your table for a pre-meal snack...FRUIT LOOPS (with a few Coco Puffs mixed in)!!!  Fruit Loops are by far my favorite sugar cereal.  And we never got to have them as kids, so they are even more special to me.  So I absolutely love that Grub gives them to people for free. :)
p.s. The food is pretty good there too!

Smorg update!

I went back to the Smorgasburg, and this time I waited in the long line for a Brisket Sandwich. The line actually moved pretty fast, and anyway it was worth it for this delicious sandwich.

I followed it up with a tiny coffee cupcake with caramel bourbon frosting (sorry about the bad pic)...

...and this super refreshing popsicle made with fresh cantaloupe and mint. SO good!!

Oh, and after I left, I turned a corner and saw this and almost lost my whole lunch:

Herradura's just my favorite tequila, that's all. Don't worry I didn't go in by myself. But now I know it's there. So much good stuff near the studio! :)

Smorgasburg!!!!

Ohmygod you guys, I'm really excited about this. My new studio in Williamsburg is just a few blocks from Smorgasburg, which just the other day Siobhan was asking me about, because she read about it in Bon Appétit. It's this awesome outdoor food market that happens every Saturday, right on the River with a great view of the city. It's like a flea market, but with really amazing delicious food for sale instead of art and antiques and stuff. It's been there since this Spring, but I finally went for the first time this last weekend.

There is such a broad range of vendors here, selling really good, fresh, "artisanal" street dishes in a wide variety of styles and cuisines, as well as prepared items like pickles, jams, candies, etc. The concept is to foster the connection between upstate farmers and city purveyors of high-quality local food. Anyway I wanted to try so many different things... this was my first course:

It was a Heritage Pork Rillette with yummy mustard on a crostini. $3 and SO good. This vendor, "Betto" also had Pork Belly meatballs, which I will definitely have to go back for.

Next, I had a Panko-Chicken Taco from "Cemitas."

I would have gotten the signature Cemita - a big fat mexican sandwich - if I hadn't already had my first course, so instead I asked the nice girl in front of me if I could take a picture of hers. As you can see, it's huge. I'll have it another time:

After my taco I did some more grazing. This was a sample of duck bacon with hot plum chutney, very tasty (and I bought some apple butter from this lady):

It started to pour rain so I had to hang out at this lovely sweet stand, and the gentleman there instisted I try all his brittle and toffee. The strange and exotic brittle you see below was amazing.., read the ingredients! Lemongrass!? Daring right? But so yummy:

Then I saw this mini cupcake stand. OMG, little bite-sized cakes for a dollar or 2! I had the Chocolate Lavender. So delish:

Another one for next time... LOOK AT THESE DOUGHNUTS. In case you can't read the tags, there is a hibiscus frosting, a passion fruit.. and they're just huge and so fresh looking.

I took home some other treats like a fantastic cilantro-lime-jalapeno condiment - which was perfect with the baked salmon we had for dinner last night - and a bottle of cold brew iced coffee for the studio. There are so many more things I have to try. For example, the longest line was at "Mighty Quinns," for their slow-smoked brisket sandwich:

I've heard this is amazing, and the line confirmed. This is tops on my list for next time. All in all, it was a great lunch and my tail was SUPER wagging here folks, I can't wait to go back.

Summer Fruit Salad...and a little Lyla bean

Saturday was Cynthia's birthday and I went over to her house Sunday to celebrate and also to meet the new edition to her family.  Since her baby daughter has an allergy to dairy and soy it was difficult for me to figure something to bring as a dessert, so I decided to make a nice fruit salad since so many fruits are in season and super yummy right now.  I used peaches, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, oranges, and grapes.

And I have to post a picture of little Ligaya aka Lyla beans...

Happy birthday Cyn!!!  And congratulations on this beautiful little baby!!!!!!!

Cheese!!!!!

I love cheese!!!! The stinkier the better!!! Last week I went to another cheese class at Murray's, this time with Jimmy and Heather. This one was pairing cheeses with beer and cider.

In case you didn't know, cheese pairs much better with beer than it does with wine. And, as I discovered, with hard cider. My favorite pairing was an Etienne Dupont Cider from Normandy with one of my favorite cheeses, Camembert. Even in it's pasteurized form (the real stuff's illegal here) one bite of this cheese brings me back to the 2 weeks I spent in Normandy, where every single night with dinner Camembert was served with the salad course. Sooo grassy and earthy and delicious; and for those of you who are afraid of rind (I'm lookin at you mom and Siobhan), a bite with this bloomy rind adds another layer of complexity. As I exclaimed in the class, "it tastes like a steak!" ...that good. Anyway, it was so good with the cider, which arguably makes sense because they come from the same region. So we took home a little wheel of this Le Chatelain Camembert, and although the stench it has created knocks us over every time we open the fridge, the taste is worth it.

Our other favorite was the Prairie Fruits Farm Black Sheep - another creamy, gooey wheel of deliciousness. I don't always love sheep's milk cheese, but oh man this one was divine. SO yummy!!!!

Quick Studio Dinner

Tonight I start my Monday night ceramics class a few doors down from the new studio. It's from 7-9, so I decided to grab a quick dinner before it starts. There is so much good food in this hood (Williamsburg)... this is a very yummy and filling White Chicken Chili from a little Mexican hole-in-the-wall around the corner. It's SO good! White beans, grilled chicken, sour cream and cheese garnish... all for $3.75! I want to make something like this soon!

Diet for Kitty

Well, I took Papi to the vet this morning, and it's official. He's overweight. To me, he is beautiful, but apparently he's obese. The last vet told us he was "big-boned" but that was 4 years ago and he's put on another 5 lbs since then. I've always just chalked his portly appearance up to his very tiny head. But the doctor even struggled a bit with the checkup because of all that extra kitty in the way. So he's going on diet food and needs to get more playtime. The good news is he seems to like the new kibble AND he gets to eat more of it!

For you Mom

From our recent trip to DC, one of the many works of art Jimmy and I were blown away by:

Mound of Butter by Antoine Vollon, 1875. We took a photo of it specifically for Ma-Finn. For those of you who don't know, she loves her butter.

Pretty

The broken rose branch I rescued from the park, currently brightening up our kitchen.

Coffee

Jimmy brought home coffee. He said he picked a flavor to represent us both. :)
